Port Overview

Buenaventura is Colombia’s main Pacific port, located on Cascajal Island in the Valle del Cauca department. It is the largest container port on the Pacific coast of Colombia and ranks among the country’s top ports by cargo volume. Strategically positioned, Buenaventura handles about 60% of Colombia’s seaborne trade, serving as a vital gateway for imports and exports to Asia and the Americas. The port has an annual container throughput of approximately 1.2 million TEUs, making it a key hub in Latin American maritime logistics.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Buenaventura, Colombia’s main Pacific port, features key terminals including Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Buenaventura (SPRBUN) for general cargo and containers, and TCBuen, a modern container terminal with a 440-meter berth. Facilities handle containers, dry and liquid bulk, breakbulk, and coal. Equipment includes ship-to-shore gantry cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs), and extensive storage areas. The port does not currently operate automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

The two major container terminals are operated by Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Buenaventura (SPRBUN) and Terminal de Contenedores de Buenaventura (TCBUEN). TCBUEN is a modern facility with advanced automation and security systems, while SPRBUN is the largest multipurpose terminal. Combined annual capacity is around 600,000 TEUs, with ongoing expansion plans to boost competitiveness. Automation levels are rising, especially at TCBUEN, which employs the latest terminal operating systems. Both terminals are strategically positioned for regional and international trade, with TCBUEN notably close to the Panama Canal.
