Civitavecchia is Italy’s major gateway port to Rome, renowned for cruise traffic and ancient history.

Civitavecchia is a major seaport located on Italy’s Tyrrhenian Sea coast, about 70 km northwest of Rome. It ranks among Italy’s top ports, serving as the principal maritime gateway for Rome and central Italy. Strategically important, Civitavecchia is a key hub for both cargo and passenger traffic, acting as a distribution center for the region’s industrial and commercial sectors. The port handles approximately 700,000 TEU annually, supporting significant containerized trade in the Mediterranean. Its modern facilities and proximity to Rome enhance its role in international logistics and tourism.
Civitavecchia’s main facilities include five cruise terminals—most notably the modern Amerigo Vespucci Terminal, one of Europe’s largest, with advanced passenger and baggage handling systems. Key cruise berths are at docks 10, 11, 12, 12 bis, 13, 13 bis, and 25. The ADM (Autostrade del Mare) terminal handles ferries and ro-ro cargo. The port is equipped with mobile cranes, container handling equipment, and offers shuttle services, but does not currently operate AGVs.
Civitavecchia’s container terminal is located in the northern commercial area and features approximately 26 freight berths, with a container storage capacity of around 15,000 TEU and an annual throughput potential of up to 700,000 TEU. The terminal uses modern cargo handling equipment but is not fully automated. Major operators include local port authorities and leading shipping lines such as Grimaldi Lines and Tirrenia.
Civitavecchia, Italy’s main port for Rome, serves as a key maritime gateway connecting central Italy to the Mediterranean. It links with ports in Sardinia, Sicily, Spain (Barcelona), Tunisia, and other North African destinations. The port supports major ferry and cruise routes, facilitating trade and passenger movement to and from Rome and the Lazio region, and is integrated into the “Motorways of the Sea” network, connecting to major European and Mediterranean markets.
