Istanbul: A bridge between Europe and Asia, rich in history and culture.

Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city, uniquely spanning both Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Covering over 5,400 square kilometers, it ranks among the world’s largest cities by area and population, with over 16 million residents. Istanbul’s strategic location controls the vital maritime passage between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, making it a key global trade and logistics hub. The city’s container ports handle an annual throughput of approximately 4 million TEU, underscoring its importance in international shipping and commerce.
Istanbul’s main port, Galataport, features a 29,000 m² underground cruise terminal with a unique hatch system, enabling secure and efficient passenger flow. Key facilities include three passenger halls, capacity for up to four cruise ships simultaneously, and storage for 15,000 luggage items. The port is equipped with modern conveyor systems, extensive CCTV security, and underground parking for 2,400 vehicles. While primarily a cruise terminal, it does not utilize AGVs or large container cranes, focusing instead on passenger and luggage handling.
Istanbul’s main container terminals are located at Ambarlı and Haydarpasa. Ambarlı has three major terminals—Marport, Kumport, and Mardasport—with a combined capacity exceeding 3 million TEU and over 20 berths. Haydarpasa offers 18 berths and handles both containers and general cargo. Automation levels are moderate, with some semi-automated equipment but no fully automated terminals. Major operators include Marport, Kumport, and Mardasport at Ambarlı, and Turkish State Railways at Haydarpasa.
Istanbul’s ports, including Haydarpaşa and Ambarlı, are strategically positioned on the Bosphorus, connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. They serve as major gateways for trade between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with direct shipping routes to key markets in Europe, North Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean. The ports are linked to regional rail and road networks, supporting efficient cargo movement to Turkey’s industrial heartlands and international destinations.
