Port Overview
Kingston, Jamaica is located on the southeastern coast of the island and is home to the world’s seventh-largest natural harbour. The Port of Kingston is the largest and busiest in Jamaica, ranking as the leading transshipment hub in the Caribbean and among the top container ports in Latin America. Its strategic position, just 32 miles from major Panama Canal trade routes, makes it vital for regional and global shipping. The port’s annual container throughput is approximately 1.6 million TEUs, supporting its role as a key logistics gateway in the Americas.
Facilities & Infrastructure
Kingston, Jamaica’s main port facilities include the Kingston Freeport Terminal (KFTL) and Kingston Wharves Limited. KFTL features six berths, 2,340 meters of quay, and water depths of 12.5–14 meters, handling up to 2.8 million TEUs. Key equipment includes 14 super post-Panamax quay cranes, 64 straddle carriers, reach stackers, and over 780 reefer outlets. Kingston Wharves operates multipurpose terminals for containers, vehicles, and bulk cargo, with modern handling equipment and 24/7 operations. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are not currently in use.
Container Terminals
Kingston, Jamaica’s container terminals comprise Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) and Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL). KFTL has 9 berths and a capacity of about 3.2 million TEUs annually, featuring advanced automation such as automated stacking systems. KWL operates 9 berths with a current capacity of 600,000 TEUs, expanding to 1 million TEUs, and uses modern cargo handling equipment. Major operators include CMA CGM (KFTL) and Kingston Wharves Limited.
