Port Overview

Koper is Slovenia’s principal seaport, located on the northern Adriatic coast near the Italian border. Covering 280 hectares, it ranks as a medium-sized port and is the country’s only container terminal. Strategically, Koper serves as a key gateway for Central and Southeast Europe, connecting these markets to the Mediterranean and Far East. The port is part of the EU’s core Baltic-Adriatic and Mediterranean transport corridors. Its annual container throughput capacity is approximately 1 million TEU, making it vital for regional logistics and trade.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Koper, Slovenia’s main port features 12 specialized terminals, including key facilities for containers, cars, general cargo, dry bulk, liquid bulk, and cruise passengers. The port is equipped with modern container cranes, mobile harbor cranes, and rail-mounted gantry cranes. It offers extensive open and covered storage, reefer points, and advanced rail connections. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are used for container handling, supporting efficient, high-capacity cargo operations. The cruise terminal is newly upgraded and sustainable.

Container Terminals

Koper, Slovenia’s main container terminal, features 5 berths and a quay length of approximately 600 meters. Its current annual capacity is 1.5 million TEU, with expansion projects aiming for 1.8 to nearly 2 million TEU. The terminal uses modern equipment with partial automation, including gantry cranes and advanced yard management systems. Luka Koper is the sole operator, handling all terminal operations and development.
