Port Overview
Lyttelton is New Zealand's largest South Island port and the country's second-largest export hub, located on the north shore of Lyttelton Harbour near Christchurch on the eastern coast. Connected to Christchurch by a road tunnel through the Port Hills (12 km northwest), it serves as the South Island's principal trade gateway, handling 61% of imports and 34% of exports by value. The port manages diverse operations including containerized cargo, coal exports (up to 2.5 million tonnes annually), petroleum storage, and serves as a regular cruise ship destination. Facilities & Infrastructure
Lyttelton Port is the South Island’s largest and busiest international gateway, handling containerized, bulk, and general cargo. Its key facilities include the Cashin Quay container terminal, which features modern ship-to-shore cranes and extensive container storage, and dedicated coal loading berths with high-capacity conveyors. The port also operates a historic dry dock for vessel maintenance and a slipway for smaller craft. Equipment includes rubber-tired gantry cranes, straddle carriers, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for efficient container movement. Expansion projects continue to boost capacity and modernize infrastructure.
Container Terminals
Lyttelton, New Zealand’s main container terminal has four berths with 580 meters of container crane rails. The terminal handles over 500,000 TEU annually and offers a capacity for around 8,000 containers, including 660 refrigerated units. Operations use advanced computerised management (SPARCS N4) and an automated truck gate system, but container handling is primarily manual with straddle carriers. The terminal is operated by Lyttelton Port Company.
