Port Overview
Oulu, Finland’s Port of Oulu is located at the mouth of the Oulujoki River on the northeast shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. As the largest general port in the Bothnian Bay, it ranks among Finland’s key northern ports. The port comprises three main harbours—Oritkari, Nuottasaari, and Vihreäsaari—serving as a strategic logistics hub for northern Finland’s industry, energy, and forestry sectors. Oulu handles approximately 3 million tons of cargo annually, with an annual container throughput of around 100,000 TEU. Its multimodal connections and deepwater access enhance its regional importance.
Facilities & Infrastructure
Port of Oulu comprises three main terminals: Oritkari, Nuottasaari, and Vihreäsaari. Oritkari specializes in container and forest industry cargo, equipped with two 50-ton cranes. Nuottasaari handles raw materials for the forest industry, featuring 8-ton and 6-ton cranes. Vihreäsaari focuses on oil and bulk cargo, with six-ton bulk cranes. The port offers multimodal connections, covered warehouses, and wheel loaders; AGVs are not currently listed among its equipment.
Container Terminals
Oulu (Uleaborg), Finland’s container terminals are primarily located at the Oritkari harbour, which features three piers dedicated to container operations. The terminal has a quay depth of up to 12.5 meters and is equipped with two 50-ton cranes. Annual container throughput is moderate, with capacity suitable for regional trade. Automation is limited; operations are mainly conventional. The major operator is the City of Oulu, with Euroports also active in terminal management.
