    Port Overview

    Tema Port is located on the eastern coast of Ghana, about 25 kilometers east of Accra. It is the largest port in Ghana and currently ranks as the biggest in terms of capacity in West and Central Africa. Covering approximately 3.9 million square meters, Tema Port serves as a key gateway for international trade in the region due to its strategic location and connectivity. Its annual container throughput exceeds 1 million TEUs, making it a critical hub for cargo movement across West Africa.

    Facilities & Infrastructure

    Tema Port, Ghana’s main seaport, features multiple key terminals including a modern container terminal, general cargo terminals, and a dedicated LNG terminal. The port is equipped with ship-to-shore gantry cranes, mobile harbor cranes, and advanced yard equipment. Recent expansions have increased capacity to handle vessels up to 22,000 TEU. The port also utilizes automated gates and modern cargo handling systems, though Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are not yet widely deployed.

    Container Terminals

    Tema Port in Ghana features a total of 22 berths, with the new container terminal having four deep berths capable of handling vessels up to 18,000 TEUs. The port is operated by Meridian Port Services, a joint venture involving Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and other international partners. The terminal is equipped with modern, state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing its automation and efficiency.

    Tema Port, Ghana’s largest and most advanced maritime gateway, connects directly to major ports in Europe, Asia, and North America. It serves not only Ghana but also landlocked West African countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
