Historically, the port primarily served as a shipping point for Florida's abundant agricultural products and, during World War II, operated as a U.S. Navy base. In recent years, its transformation has accelerated, especially after St. Lucie County acquired key terminal assets and partnered with Derecktor Shipyards. The world's largest mobile boat hoist was installed, reinforcing its status as a premier facility for large yachts and sailing vessels. The port's redevelopment has sparked substantial investment and new opportunities, including the creation of Harbour Pointe Park—a mixed-use destination supporting recreational, marine commercial, and artificial reef initiatives. Its strategic location between Port Canaveral and Miami, with direct deepwater access to the Atlantic Ocean and proximity to Treasure Coast International Airport, positions Fort Pierce as a critical node for specialized maritime operations, marine industrial services, and future niche cargo or cruise activities.
